David Brown Gear Systems (“DBGS”) designs, manufactures, distributes and services highly engineered to order industrial gear and drive systems, products and related equipment for use in a wide range of industry sectors including wind energy, solar energy, mining, oil and gas, conventional power and rail. In addition it operates centres of excellence in the defence, hydro energy, cement, metals, food and packaging, rubber and sugar industries.

Strategy

CBC’s investment strategy is to reposition the business as a market driven, global operation, by establishing market facing global business units to take advantage of the growth opportunities identified. New revenue streams have been generated from the wind energy, solar and high speed rail markets and areas of localised expertise in mining, rail, defence, oil & gas, power generation and aftermarket are being globalised. In addition major steps have been made in entering the high growth industrial regions of China, India and South America.

Locations

The company is headquartered in the UK with global manufacturing locations on five continents. Heavy and light engineering plants (incorporating service and repair centres) are located in the UK, France, Australia, South Africa and the US. A further heavy engineering site has been established during 2010 in China with a local JV partner. Sales and service centres are situated in Eastern Europe, Russia, Indonesia, India, Brazil and Chile/Peru giving the business worldwide distribution capability.

Competitive position

DBGS has the widest product capability on the market with five distinct product groups – industrial engineered products, industrial aftermarket, land & naval defence, double enveloping worm gears and industrial reducers. DBGS’ product capability includes many proprietary technologies. These products are supplied into a blue-chip customer base including Rio Tinto, Vestas, Clipper, RWE, E-on, Alstom, Drax, Lafarge, Michelin, Eskom, Tetra Pak, Sulzer, US Department of Defence, UK Ministry of Defence and BAE Systems.

Management

The DBGS management team is John Paterson (CEO) and David Armitt, the Business Services Director.
