Secretary of State for Defence officially opens David Brown Santasalo’s new facility, signaling start of Type 26 Global Combat Ship gearbox production
13th December 2016
Secretary of State for Defence, Sir Michael Fallon KCB MP, last week declared David Brown Santasalo’s new facility officially open at a celebratory event attended by David Brown Santasalo employees, UK Ministry of Defence, BAE Systems and the company’s key industry contacts.
Located at David Brown Santasalo’s Park Works site in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, the new Gearbox Assembly & Test Facility will be instrumental in building and testing main propulsion gearbox systems for the Type 26 Global Combat Ship, one of the world’s most advanced naval platforms.
Each main reduction gearbox has been specifically designed by David Brown Santasalo’s expert defence engineering team and will propel Type 26 Global Combat Ships using the quietest, most reliable and efficient technology to optimise the performance of this future addition to the Royal Navy’s fleet. The first gearboxes will be delivered in 2018.
Secretary of State for Defence, Sir Michael Fallon KCB MP said: “Defence spending benefits every part of our country. As well as being home to key military units, Yorkshire is home to some of our great defence supply chain businesses, with hundreds of millions of pounds’ worth of contracts supporting over 600 local firms and thousands of jobs. The UK’s rising defence budget secures vital projects that help keep Britain both safe and prosperous.”
Thomas Burley, CEO, David Brown Santasalo, adds: “We are delighted to welcome Secretary of State, Sir Michael Fallon to our new Gearbox Assembly & Test facility. Next year, the team based in our new facility will begin to build main propulsion gear systems for one of the world’s most advanced naval platforms – Type 26 Global Combat Ship. Not only has this project been a great achievement for a David Brown Santasalo, but for our British engineering and manufacturing industry as a whole.
“There are many people who have dedicated time, energy and resources to make our new building a reality and I would like to thank everyone for their contribution.”
Geoff Searle, BAE Systems’ Type 26 Global Combat Ship Programme Director, said: “The opening of David Brown Santasalo’s new facility in Huddersfield is a significant milestone for the Type 26 programme. We have invested in this facility to manufacture and fully test all of the advanced gearboxes for Type 26 prior to their delivery to Glasgow. David Brown Santasalo, along with the other companies in the supply chain, will play an integral part in moving to the manufacturing phase for our first of class in summer 2017.”
The addition of a new Gearbox Assembly & Test Facility is part of recent infrastructure enhancements at David Brown Santasalo, a Clyde Blowers Capital company. In 2015, a new gear case boring facility was built to house a state of the art case boring machine, further developing the company’s UK gear manufacturing, assembly and test facilities.
